I did this self-portrait as an introduction image to my portrait class last semester. I thought it would be cool to experiment with text. I could have taken this idea further. Photoshopping the text on my skin to make it seem as if the words were tattooed on my face might have been cool. Chalk it up to experience. I just figured I would share this photo so you could all get to know me a little better. I have a lot on my mind. This is as good of a release as anything else. Words hurt, labels are bullshit. We need to get to know people before rushing to judgement. This might not be possible in today’s world.
Mucho Gusto
I’m new to the weekly photo challenge, but any excuse to share images is cool with me. I suppose my companion would be my daughter Penelope. When she was born I quit my $50,000 a year job for the Federal Government to raise her while her mom brought home the bacon. It has been the most wonderful experience I could have ever imagined. It isn’t always easy, but it is most definitely rewarding.
Watching a human being grow up in front of your eyes, watching them learn and discover all the amazing and beautiful things around them, it is truly marvelous. This shot was taken at Bighorn Sheep Canyon campground, where myself and the rest of my companions love to be: Out in the world, traveling and exploring.
Weekly Photo Challenge: Companionable
I’ve learned everything I know about film photography through google searches and photography text books. I’ve been experimenting shooting with film as of late. It has been a disappointment for the most part. I love the feeling of shooting analog, but I am clumsy with changing and loading film into my cameras. I turned in 7 rolls and 4 of them were blanks, which I am pretty sure is because I had a hard time figuring out how to rewind my film in the camera before opening the back of it. I think my next project with film will be better, as I think I have all the kinks in my flow worked out.
This was shot with a Leica C2 Zoom camera I found on eBay. I thought I would give it a whirl and see what I came up with. Major light leak, and some scratches are showing up on the developed film.
The lessons I have learned so far are that shooting film isn’t cheap, and I have a lot left to learn. It’s about time to explore developing my own film, which is something I have been wanting to learn anyway.
Misadventures in Film Photography

The South Park Valley
This is an image of my old VW bus. We called it “The Pig” My family and I have ridden the pig over just about every mountain pass in Colorado. When the engine blew up on us, just over a year ago, we were heartbroken. In our family we live our lives in the pursuit of one goal, to live a life on the road. The plans are in full swing and we are closer to our dream than we ever have been before. We are going to travel until we get sick of it or we just physically cannot do it anymore.

Walking around Denver with an iPhone
Walking around Denver with an iPhone, a set on Flickr.
I finally broke down and purchased my first iPhone, the 4S. Im not sure if that outs me as someone who is behind the times, poor, or just un-hip, but for some reason I waited until the 4th iteration of the iPhone to go ahead and give it a shot.
When I ran into a problem with the mirror on my Pentax K-5, I decided to send it in for a repair before the warranty expired. The loss of my camera for what could be 6 or 7 weeks has me concentrating on my oddball cameras. I have a couple of SLR cameras from the eighties, as well as a Leica C2-Zoom. Throw in the iPhone and an Olympus Pen E-PL1 and I have plenty of alternative options to continue exploring and practicing photography. The Leica cost me $50 on ebay and is a fun, if not cumbersome, camera to shoot with. It’s the only Leica i could afford, and I’m pretty sure it has some parts from a Japanese company in there as well.
I don’t claim to be great, but I love shooting. This is a series of images taken with the iPhone and the olloclip lens attachment. The wide angle side of the lens gives you great coverage for shooting buildings downtown. I see a lot of distortion, but I don’t mind it so much. It’s iPhoneography, in my mind it is just for fun, but it still never ceases to amaze me how far the cell phone camera has come.
The Pentax MG was introduced in 1981 and remained in production until 1984.
It is considered an entry level 35mm semi-automatic camera.
The Pentax MG was a manual focus, aperture priority camera, with no manual settings of speeds.
This is one of my film cameras.
